This Is

This is

This project was started in 2015 in a studio class. We were tasked with designing, making, and selling a product. Since then, it's become much more than a class assignment. Designing these bags uncovered my passion for designing soft goods and working with leather. It also helped me realize how much I love working with other people. I've learned so much from being a part of this experience.

The This Is brand was created as a collaboration with designer, Jia Lu Ni

The Bag

The bag was designed with the "person that does it all" in mind. We chose neutral materials to keep the bag simultaneously professional and casual. The materials for the bag were chosen with the idea that this bag will last. Natural canvas ages beautifully with time, the unstained veg tan leather will take on more color as it's worn, and the solid brass hardware will develop a nice patina with time. The backpack features a laptop pocket, side zipper for easy access into the pocket, front pocket for a customizable supply panel, and a small side pocket for phone storage.

The panel

The panel was designed to organize your small things and eliminate the need to rummage aimlessly in the bottom of your bag. We designed two different panel versions so individuals could choose the best panel for their items.

The Brand

We developed a booklet describing the This Is brand values. This booklet was made to be given out at the Maker Market where our products were sold.

the Process

The project didn't start out with refined products and materials. Learn more about our thought process throughout the project by clicking on the images below.

The Redesign

In the Summer of 2016, Jia Lu and I picked up the project again with the mindset that we wanted to refine This Is even further. We made a few tweaks to our 2014 backpack, further developed the brand, and imagined what This Is could be if we expanded the product line. See the 2016 project process here.
